Author Biography:

Paul Kalanithi (1977–2015) was an American neurosurgeon, writer, and philosopher at heart. Raised in Kingman, Arizona, he cultivated a deep love for literature and science, which led him to earn degrees in both English literature and human biology at Stanford University. Driven by an insatiable curiosity about the nature of existence, he went on to study history and philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge before enrolling at the Yale School of Medicine.

During his residency in neurosurgery at Stanford, Kalanithi’s dedication to understanding both the physical and existential aspects of the brain became increasingly apparent. His work bridged the gap between the meticulous world of neurosurgery and the broader philosophical questions about life and death. When diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, Kalanithi chose to share his journey with the world, penning When Breath Becomes Air with gripping honesty. His posthumously published memoir stands as a testament to his enduring belief in compassion, empathy, and the power of the human spirit.
