Rapture by acclaimed Australian author Emily Maguire is a compelling historical novel that reimagines the enigmatic legend of Pope Joan, a woman who, according to lore, ascended to the papacy in the ninth century. Through meticulous research and vivid storytelling, Maguire brings to life the character of Agnes, a brilliant and devout woman who defies the rigid gender norms of her time.

Born in 816 in Mainz, Agnes is the motherless daughter of an English priest. Her father, recognizing her exceptional intellect, provides her with an education typically reserved for men. Determined to pursue a life of learning and spiritual devotion, Agnes disguises herself as a man, adopting the identity of Brother John. Her journey takes her from the monastic community of Fulda to the intellectual circles of Athens, and ultimately to Rome, where her profound knowledge and piety lead her to the highest echelons of the Church.

Maguire's narrative delves into themes of faith, identity, and the pursuit of knowledge, all set against the backdrop of a tumultuous medieval Europe. The novel explores the complexities of Agnes's dual existence, her internal struggles with faith and desire, and the societal constraints imposed upon women. Through Agnes's eyes, readers experience the challenges and triumphs of a woman who dared to transcend the limitations of her era.

Rapture has garnered critical acclaim for its rich character development and immersive historical setting. Reviewers have praised Maguire's ability to make a distant time feel vivid and its concerns alive, highlighting the novel's blend of historical accuracy and imaginative storytelling.
